Tone, a former partisan who once believed in an ideal and rightful society, is now barely able to make his living as road laborer. He has an ex-wife and a daughter who are living in his flat, he lives in a sub-let room. His relationship with the waitress Magda is also problematical. Because of his troubles with money, he lets himself be persuaded by his two colleagues, to help a group of emigrants to cross the border illegally.
